BESS & BACK OFFICE MANAGER (Energy Management) MADRID – HYBRID
BNZ is an independent power producer (IPP) in a phase of accelerated growth and expansion, aiming to consolidate itself as a leader in the development and operation of renewable energy assets in Southern Europe (Spain, Portugal, and Italy). The company is part of the portfolio of Nuveen Infrastructure, one of Europe's largest renewable energy fund managers.
The selected candidate will join the Revenue (Energy Management) area, a key and recently created department where high performance and autonomy are essential. This is a strategic Manager-level role without an initial team, reporting directly to the Head of Department, and with high visibility within a flat and dynamic structure. The position is fundamental to ensuring the financial integrity of the various revenue streams (Settlements/Back Office) and to providing supervision and expert judgment on the optimization strategy of new energy storage systems (BESS), a pillar of the company's growth. We are looking for a candidate with a growth mindset, who enjoys challenges and wants to build an area from scratch.
RESPONSABILITIES
Mission: To ensure accuracy, rigor, and compliance in the settlement and control process of the various revenue streams (PPAs, Hedges, Market Agents, BESS), while simultaneously supervising and analyzing the operation and monetization strategy of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) in the ancillary services markets of the countries where BNZ operates (Spain, Portugal, Italy). This role ensures data integrity, manages regulatory reporting, and drives continuous process improvement in collaboration with Finance and Asset Management.
The role is divided into two strategic areas, covering all aspects of Back Office and BESS performance management, in line with the required complexity of the role.
Back Office and Settlements (Core Responsibilities)
· Settlements Management: Responsible for the settlements of the different revenue streams of the company (PPAs, Hedges, Market Agents, BESS, etc.). Responsible for the complete settlement process for all energy transactions, including organized markets (e.g., EEX), bilateral (OTC) trades, and ancillary/balancing services with market agents.
· Data Integrity: Ensure the integrity and accuracy of settlement data, interacting fluently with the Front Office and Middle Office. Guarantee the integrity, accuracy, and timeliness of all transaction data (trades, prices, volumes) and prepare and present periodic reports on Back Office P&L (Profit & Loss), counterparty exposure, and settled volumes for management
· Regulatory Reporting: Manage the necessary regulatory reporting and documentation for the area’s operations.
· Financial integrity: Verify collections and payments associated with trading activities, ensuring correct bank reconciliation in collaboration with the Treasury department.
· Invoicing: Ensure the accurate and timely issuance and reception of invoices, self-invoices (or reverse charge invoices), and debit/credit notes with all counterparties, system operators, and clearing houses.
· Dispute Resolution: Lead the investigation and resolution of any settlement disputes or discrepancies (prices, volumes, amounts) in a timely and professional manner.
· Compliance and Documentation: Ensure compliance with industry regulatory reporting obligations, such as REMIT and EMIR. Maintain updated contractual documentation with counterparties, including master agreements (e.g., ISDA, EFET) and Know Your Customer (KYC) documentation.
· Process Improvement: Identify and implement continuous improvements in Back Office workflows to increase efficiency, reduce operational risk, and improve accuracy.
BESS Strategy Supervision (Storage Management)
· Performance Analysis: Analyze and evaluate the optimization strategy for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) implemented by third parties (market agents), including participation in day-ahead market, intraday markets, ancillary services and capacity markets.
· Market Evaluation: Possess expert knowledge of the various ancillary services markets (secondary, tertiary, daily, and intraday markets) to assess whether the battery is achieving maximum performance.
· Strategy Support: Propose, with independent criteria, adjustments and improvements in the BESS operational strategies to the market agents. Detect potential actions for optimization.
REQUIREMENTS
Experience: Minimum 4 years of relevant working experience, preferably in the energy sector, having gained experience in a similar role or in energy/market management.
· Work Context: Experience or potential in developing internal control policies and risk management strategies to integrate business, legal, and regulatory concepts.
· Sector Knowledge: Ability to understand the company’s key business and strategic objectives.
· Languages: Fluent English required. Spanish desirable. Italian and/or Portuguese languages are a plus
· Education: University Degree in Engineering (Industrial, Electrical, etc.), Physics, Mathematics, Economics, or Business Administration. A strong academic background is required.
· Key Competencies: Proactivity and agility in decision-making, strong analytical capability, high achievement drive, adaptability and flexibility and independence.
